Citizenship and Immigration Canada Selects Unisys for Biometrics Field Trial
Trial to Test the Operational Impact of Using Biometrics Technologies in Canada's Immigration Program
OTTAWA, CANADA, July 12, 2006 - Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has selected Unisys Canada Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Unisys Corp. (NYSE:UIS - News), to supply, install and support a solution that will allow CIC to conduct a six-month biometrics field trial. The trial will test the impact of introducing two biometric technologies - fingerprint and facial recognition - on CIC operations. The six-month contract is valued at approximately $835,000 USD.
Approximately 15,000 fingerprints and facial images will be collected from field trial participants. Analysis of the information collected will be conducted separately.
"We are grateful to CIC for giving Unisys Canada Inc. an opportunity to demonstrate its extensive experience in providing biometric solutions to government entities. As Canadian governments and their respective agencies desire and require enhanced biometric security solutions, Unisys Canada looks forward to working with CIC to assist them in meeting global security challenges," said Bob Binns, president, Unisys Canada Inc.
ImageWare, a subcontractor to Unisys on this engagement and a leading developer and provider of identity management solutions, is providing its IWS™ Biometric Engine® Border Management Solution, a Web-based, multi-biometric ID management system. This flexible and scaleable solution supports land, air and sea ports and utilizes biometrics - including face, fingerprint and iris - during enrollment and identification processing.
Also included is IWS proprietary software that permits the use of third-party biometric algorithms and third-party biometric scanners and RFID reader/writers. The application will be used at Canadian visa offices in Seattle and Hong Kong.
The system will use a Microsoft SQL server. Verification points for the field trial will use IWS' Web-based application to identify participating travelers with visas and will be installed on Unisys ES3120 enterprise server that will be housed in a secure government facility.
