Canada testing biometrics for immigrants

June 13, 2006

Canadian border and immigration agents will test a biometric system along the Canadian border as part of a subcontracting agreement.

ImageWare Systems' Biometric Engine Border Management solution will be used as part of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada biometrics field trial, under a contract announced last week.

The open architecture solution will test the use of multiple biometrics in Canada's immigration system on temporary resident visa applicants and refugee claimants. The solution includes facial and fingerprint biometric capabilities for security and identity verification at designated ports, border stations, an airport, a refugee processing center, and immigration offices in Canadian provinces, Seattle, and Hong Kong.

"The IWS™ Biometric Engine® Border Management product was specifically designed to provide the flexible and scalable performance needed in biometric identity management solutions to increase border security," Jim Miller, ImageWare's chairman and chief executive officer, said in a prepared statement.
