The New Face of Shipboard Photos

By Spud Hilton
February 01, 2004

Technology being used to find wanted criminals is going to be used to find you -- shaking hands with the captain.

In spring, Carnival Cruise Line plans to test a photo-retrieval kiosk aboard the new 2,124-passenger Carnival Miracle that will use facial recognition software to find your vacation pictures. According to ImageWare Systems, the company providing the technology, the kiosk takes a snapshot of a passenger and uses the likeness to find and display all photos that the passenger is in, including group shots. Then it's just a matter of using the touch screen to select desired shots and print them out (for a fee, of course).

"If successful, we anticipate implementing the system aboard our other 'Fun Ships,' " said Bob Woodry, Carnival's vice president of Photo/Video Services.

The kiosk is part of Carnival's larger plan to switch from film to digital photography on six of its ships this year. On a typical megaliner with 2,000-plus passengers, the photography staff develops and prints more than 4, 000 photos, a large portion of which end up in the recycling bin.
