ImageWare to co-sponsor border technology summit

By Clayton Worfolk
June 28, 2005

San Diego-based ImageWare Systems Inc. (AMEX: IW) will co-sponsor the Global Border Control Technology Summit to be held next month in London, the company said Tuesday.

The event brings together international governments and developers of biometric security systems, which utilize physiological characteristics -- like fingerprints, voice and eyes -- for authentication purposes.

Summit attendees will discuss practical, technical and commercial issues relating to biometric technology and its use in travel, border and national identity schemes, according to an ImageWare press release.

"It is extremely important to have an international platform to showcase the newest technologies in the biometrics market and discuss practical implementation issues with our leading government agencies," ImageWare CEO Jim Miller stated in the release.

ImageWare Senior Vice President of Technology and Business Development Bill Willis will speak on border identification systems and biometric passports at the conference.

ImageWare develops and provides identity management products used by government, aviation, corporate and law-enforcement organizations for identification and verification purposes, according to the release.

In addition to biometrics, ImageWare also develops complementary product lines in secure credentials, law enforcement and digital imaging, making the conference an opportunity for the company to demonstrate its versatility to an international audience, according to spokeswoman Joyce Watts.

Representatives from security-technology companies Identix (Nasdaq: IDNX) and Viisage (Nasdaq: VISGE) will also participate, as will members of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State.

The summit will be held at the Selfridge Hotel in London July 11 to July 12.

IW was up 6 cents, or 1.76 percent, to $3.47 in afternoon trading.
